Victory Through the Word

Often we forget that we would not be alive if not for the Word of God. The reason the world exists, and you and I are on the planet, is because God spoke it and us into existence (Genesis 1, 2).

By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. (Hebrews 11:3)

If we needed His Word to be created then we need His Word to live. For this reason alone, God’s Word deserves our attention. Our survival, both physical and spiritual, depends on it.

We all face challenges in our lives. They come in the form of health issues, financial lack, relationship challenges, and the need for protection. God has provided a way of victory for each of these circumstances. However, that means of victory must be received by faith—that same faith that inspires us to believe that God created the world. Simply put, faith is believing and trusting God and His Word.

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. (1 John 5:4)

How do we obtain this faith? By hearing God’s Word.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

Clearly, our ability to live as a conqueror in life comes from God’s Word—nothing more and nothing less. To neglect that Word means defeat; or at the very least, less than God’s best for us.

God has called us to live life by faith and not by how we feel or by what we see (1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus corrected Thomas for basing his faith on what he saw and felt, rather than the truth of Jesus’ Word—His promise to rise again and the testimony of believing disciples. It’s impossible to please God without faith in His Word, and impossible to receive His blessings without it.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6).

Out of that faith will come action, because “faith without works is dead” (James 2:14-26). We prove our faith by the way we respond and act on the Word we receive.

Actions may include worshiping the God of our victory, regardless of whether we see the victory with our eyes. It may come in the form of giving in the offering before all our bills are paid. Perhaps its showing acts of kindness despite someone’s unkindness toward us, or praying for the sick before our healing has manifested. But even then, for these to be faith actions, they must be backed by a Word from God—either from the Bible or directly from His Spirit to ours.

At times, we may get so caught up in the acting that we forget the faith in the heart. We may have built up our faith in the past for something God promised, yet over time neglected to nurture that faith. We decide to act out of routine because we did it before, not realizing that our faith has diminished. Or perhaps we’ve gotten so caught up in the acts of faith from the very beginning that we never took the time to find out what God said in the first place. The result would have been the same—no victory.

Discovering God’s will in His Word always precedes acts of faith. Without the Word, we would not know that our action would be effective. We would not know who or how to worship without the Word. We would not understand the principle of tithes, offerings, and sowing and reaping without the Word. We would not know the principles of love and kindness if not for the Word. We would not know God’s promise of healing and protection, and how to trust Him with both, if not for the Word. Our existence and everything we know about our walk with God is based on that Book. God’s Word is the foundation for everything we believe—including our salvation. Without it, we would have no foundation at all.

If we want to be successful—to have the victory in every area of our lives—we must give attention to God’s Word. Our motivation should be because: 1) we love Him and therefore obey Him, and 2) we see the need for it in our lives.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Joshua 1:8)

As we discover the benefits of God’s Word through study, why wouldn’t we want to give attention to it as a lifestyle? It holds everything we need in life—even more than our physical minds know. We should make it our greatest delight, determine we can’t live without it, and desire it more than food and gold (Job 23:12, Psalm 1:2, Psalm 19:10-11).

It’s never a waste of our time when we honor God’s Word with our attention, study, and memorization. We can expect it to accomplish every victory God promised and intended, if we will receive it and act on it by faith from our hearts.

So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)
